Thule Step Up Broke and Sits Too Low On Tire

I bought this to be able to stand on it and reach over to put my snowboards atop my Honda Pilot. thule 232 step up works as described, but then the day of the trip I stood on it and the rivet that held the side strap together on one end broke; this rivet was not welded but clamped closed, so naturally my weight (only 135 pounds!) snapped it open. I had to scurry and find a pair of pliers and squeeze it back together and use it carefully during that trip. But I found out that I can step on my car sidestep after opening the passenger door and still reach the top and also be a few inches higher than what the Thule would have provided (although by stepping there I am a few inches away from where the Thule would have put me on top of (right above the back tire compared to a few inches forward so I had to reach a little).
